Healthcare Options for Veterans and their Families

Below you will find information on various healthcare programs and topics for veterans and their families.  To get more information, each of the headings is a link that will bring you to a new page with more detailed information.  Also, make sure to check out the section on benefits, as many benefit programs exist to assist veterans with health issues.

VA Healthcare

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, commonly referred to simply as the VA, operates a hospital and four clinics in or adjacent to Vermont.  They provide a full range of services for veterans, to include prescription benefits.

VA Healthcare for Recent Combat Veterans

Veterans returning from a combat theater have expanded eligibility for VA Healthcare for a temporary period after their discharge.

Mental Health Care

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression, are normal reactions to abnormal situations, such as life in a combat theater.  Veterans and family members who would like to talk to counselors have many options in Vermont, from VA Healthcare and Vet Centers to Community Mental Health.

Traumatic Brain Injury

Many people call Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) the signature injury of the War on Terror, as military members exposed to explosive forces can have a TBI, even if there is no outward signs of injury.  But TBI also affects people who have had falls, been in car accidents, or had a blow to the head.  Find out how to get screened and what resources are available in Vermont.

Long Term Care

Veterans and their families have additional options when it comes to long term care, both in nursing homes or in their own home.

TriCare

TriCare provides healthcare coverage to active duty military members, retired military members, and their families.

Other State and Federal Programs that Provide Healthcare

Sometimes the best solution isn't one specifically designed for veterans, especially when families are involved.  Find out what other health care programs are available.

Transportation to VA Healthcare

Veterans who need transportation to VA hospitals and clinics can get a ride with the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Transportation Network.  Volunteers in this network pick up veterans in their local area and takes them to VA facilities for medical appointments. Call the number below to get in touch with the transportation coordinator in your area.
